30th June 2014

Hola! Spanish week was fantastic and we all enjoyed our flamenco dancing on Friday. Maybe you have had some demonstrations this weekend!

On Friday we will be going on our end of year trip to Gulliver’s World! Please arrive at school at the normal time on Friday and we hope to arrive back at school at approximately 3.30pm.
Please send a packed lunch in a disposable bag, clearly labelled, no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. Should the weather be lovely and sunny (fingers crossed!) please ensure that your child has a sun hat, covered shoulders and sun cream. Likewise, if the weather is bad, please send them in appropriate outdoor clothing ( waterproof coat and shoes). Your child can bring up to £3.00 to spend.
We are looking forward to a fantastically exciting day!

English

In English this week we will be looking at the book “The Magic Finger” by Roald Dahl.
We will discuss the importance of the blurb, freeze frame events in the story and discuss what it would be like to have a magic finger!
At the end of the week the children will then be able to write their own adventure story!

Can you have a look at some of your books at home and see if they have a blurb? Does the blurb make you want to read the book?

Maths

This week in maths we will be doubling multiples of 5, halving multiples of 10 and using near doubles.
We will also be looking at the relationship between halves and quarters.

Science
This week we will be continuing our new topic on Living Things.
We will be asking the question “Can I find some plants and minibeasts and name them?”
We will be venturing outside to go on a minibeast hunt! We will carefully collect the minibeasts and note where they were found. We will try to work out why the minibeasts were found where they were.
We will be careful to return the minibeasts to their homes once we have observed them.
Can you have a minibeast hunt in your garden or at the park? Can you identify the creatures that you find?
Make sure that you put them back in their home once you have observed them.
Topic
We will be continuing our topic The Football World Cup, which the children are really enjoying!
This week we will be continuing to look at the maths involved in the World Cup!
We will be looking at which teams have won in the past and completing a tally chart to show the data. We will then represent the data in a pictogram!
Reminders
Sports Day

The new date for Sports Day is Friday 11th July.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused.  It will be held in the afternoon for our Foundation Stage and Key Stage One children. We would love to see you all there, so all we can do now is to hope for good weather! If you haven't already done so, could you please check that your child's pumps fit them, and that they have appropriate school PE kit.

Sun cream
And finally, we are delighted to be able to request that children bring a hat and sun cream into school for the rest of the term! The weather has been absolutely beautiful and we are optimistic that it will continue, so it is important that our little ones are protected from the sun.

If you apply a layer before they come to school in the morning, this will last until lunchtime. It is also important that they are able to apply it themselves.

Thank you for your continued support.
Year 1/2 Team.

Year 2 children will understand multiplication as repeated addition; and division as its inverse; recognise 2-digit multiples of 2, 5 and 10; and know their multiplication facts

Helping the children to learn their times tables is a vital strategy to help them with mental addition and subtraction of much bigger numbers.

Science
This week we will be continuing our new topic on Living Things.
We will be asking the question “Where do things live?”
We will talk about the habitats that animals and plants live in. Most animals and plants have to live in the right environment to enable their needs to be met. Animals can move to a suitable habitat and plants have to spread their seeds to enable seedlings to start growing in suitable habitats.
Do you have pets at home? Can you talk about what you need to do to make sure that they stay healthy & alive? Can you also talk about what you do to keep plants healthy?
Topic
Our new topic is The Football World Cup which the children are really enjoying!
This week we will be looking at the maths involved in the World Cup!
We will be talking about how many teams there are, how many in each group and how many matches they will be playing. We will show how the number of goals scored for & against & the points gained will be recorded (3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss) in the group matches.
We will then be completing a challenge! We will have three team kits  of shirts and shorts. We will explain that these are the only colours available & FIFA want to find out how many different combinations there can be. So the red shirt could for example be matched with the blue shorts. We will cut out the shirts and shorts & pair them up to find the possibilities!

Science

This week we will be continuing our new topic on Living Things.

We will be asking the question “When is a thing a living thing?”

We will talk about the seven processes that all living things exhibit. These are movement, reproduction, sensitivity, nutrition, excretion, respiration and growth.

This week we will be looking at the flag of England and the Union Flag. We will also be looking at the flags of some of the other countries in The World Cup. We will be looking at the shapes and patterns that we can see. We will then sort the flags by pattern and colour.

Reminders

This week we will be carrying out our phonics screening check for the Year 1 children and also some of the children in Year 2. It would be helpful if you could continue to practise the phonemes at home with your child. There are lots of useful websites detailed above to help you with this.

We had a great time last week at Tattenhall with the Year 2 children and we know that you will have had some very tired children at home this weekend. We would love to see some of the photos that the children have taken, so please do send them in to share.
