6th May 2014

Hi! Hope you have all had a fabulous bank holiday weekend!

It will be another busy week in KS1.

We are all very excited about our trip to Weaver Hall Museum. We will be learning more about the Great Fire of London and what life was like then. If we are really lucky we may even get to meet Samuel Pepys!

The Year 1 children will be visiting the museum on Tuesday 6th May and the Year 2 children will be visiting on Wednesday 7th May. We will be back at 3.00pm on both days.

The children will need to wear school uniform as it is an educational visit. They will also need a packed lunch in a named plastic carrier bag. Please do not include glass bottles.

English

In English this week will be continuing to learn about nocturnal animals. We will be researching different nocturnal animals before writing our own reports on them.

We will also be writing a short biography on the life of Samuel Pepys!

Our objectives this week are to:-

  1. Understand differences between fact and fiction and be able to explain this.
  2. Ask simple and more complex questions.
  3. Talk about key structural features of an information page in a book.
  4. Produce own information page using key features, eg captions, labels, text boxes etc.
  5. Recognise and talk about the features of a non-chronological report.
  6. Write more complex sentences for a non-chronological report in an appropriate style.

Can you think of any animals that wake up at night? Have a look at some of the websites below to give you some ideas!

Science

This week in science we will be continuing our topic Changing Materials. We will be going to try to find out - Which objects will change shape if we stretch, twist, bend or squash them? The children will have a set of objects to explore and will see how they change when they use different forces on them.

Can you have a look around at home and identify which materials have been used to make different things. Why have these materials been chosen? Can you change the shape of any of these objects?

(contains some useful links to sites about materials).

Topic

In topic we will be continuing to look at The Great Fire of London. We will be finding out lots more about this when we visit Weaver Hall Museum!

We will ask the children if they remember the story of the Great Fire?  We will re-tell the story & make sure the children understand the main aspects. Ask key questions? Where did it start? Why did it start? What helped to make it stop? (Wind died down & gunpowder explosions caused breaks). What famous buildings were destroyed? We will ask children to imagine how the fire spread & how difficult it was to stop! Happily, at the end remarkably few people seem to have actually lost their lives – only about 8 or 9. This was because most people had time to clear their houses of their most important possessions & then escape without being burnt.

This amazing virtual tour of St Paul’s has a brilliant animation of the Great Fire. Click on Explore St Paul’s and then on the picture to reach this (or use the click here link). The page you reach contains a Thumbnail picture of the great fire on the right (use vertical scroll bar to find it amongst other short animations) on which you click for an audio video animation. QUITE SUPERB!

This is a must!

VERY good brief history

Good history outline with excellent extract from Pepys

This one is simple and clear and has a good map showing the extent of the fire on successive days

Come and See

The children will be continuing their new topic “Spread The Word”.

Jesus is risen

We will be looking at the verses in Luke that describe when the women went to the tomb and found that Jesus was not there. The women were then given the message that Jesus had been raised from the dead. The women took this message to the disciples.

Some questions we will be thinking about.

  • How do you think the women were feeling?
  • What was the message the men gave to the women?
  • What had Jesus told them to remember? Discuss the words used.
  • How do you think the eleven disciples felt when they heard the news from the women?

Reminders

SATs

We will be continuing the KS1 SATs tests for the Y2 children this week. If possible please could you try to ensure that the Y2 children are in school every day as testing could go on any day. Experience has shown it is better for the children to carry out the assessments as part of a group rather than on their own if they are absent. Obviously if the children are ill we do understand.

Thank you for your continued support.

Year 1/2 Team.
