This week is the last week before our half-term
break. Let’s hope the sun makes an appearance then too!
English
This
week in English we will be looking at ways to improve our writing.
These
are our objectives for this week:-
- To use a connective to extend a sentence.
- To use commas when writing a list.Can you make up a sentence together and then try to extend it with a connective such as because, but or so?Can you write a list, such as a shopping list, and put commas between the different items?We will also be working on basic skills in reading and writing including developing comprehension skills and the correct use of capital letters and full stops.Some websites to help:-Phonics websitesworksheets for-- consonant and vowel recognition,- initial consonant sounds,- beginning and end blends,- consonant diagraphs,- silent letters,- long vowel sounds,- Phase 3 and 5 sounds.a good selection of resources including worksheets and some interactive games. Maths
This week in Maths we
will be continuing to learn about addition and subtraction with a focus on
problem solving.
Year 1 children will be
learning to add two 'teens' numbers, not crossing a multiple of
10; subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number by counting
back and subtract one multiple of 10 from another.
Year 2 children will be
learning to add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number; add two 2-digit
numbers and subtract one 2-digit number from another.

Science
This
week in science we will be continuing our topic Changing Materials. We will be going to try to find out – what happens to different
materials when we heat them?
Following on from our work
last week when we looked at the changes in bread when it is toasted, this week
we are going to be looking at what happens to chocolate when we heat it. We may
also have to have a little taste! J
Can you look together at
how foods change when we cook them? What differences can you see? Can you get
the original materials back again?
Topic
In topic we will be continuing to look at The Great Fire of London.
We
will be looking at entries from Pepys diary and reading what he says about his
experiences of the fire. We will also read some of the entries from John
Evelyn. We will discuss what an eye-witness account is. We will listen out for
words that describe how awful the whole Great Fire was: ‘miserable’, ‘rage’,
‘devoured’. We will note the style of diary entries – past tense, written in
the first person. We will imagine that we were a person living in London in the area of
Pudding Lane at the time of the Great Fire. We will then plan and write our own
diary entries!

The Ascension
We
will be thinking about the last time Jesus met his friends. They knew He had to
return to His Father in Heaven. They were looking forward to the coming of the
Holy Spirit and how the Spirit would help them.
This
day is remembered every year by the Church at a special feast. The Ascension
means the return of Jesus to His Father in Heaven after the Resurrection.
Some
questions we will be thinking about.
- Can you remember what was promised to the disciples?
- How do you think that the disciples felt when Jesus blessed them?
- How do you think they felt when Jesus was taken from them?
- Where was Jesus going?
- What do Christians do to remember the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven?
Reminders

SATs
We will be continuing
the KS1 SATs tests for the Y2 children this week. If possible please could you
try to ensure that the Y2 children are in school every day as testing could go
on any day. Experience has shown it is better for the children to carry out the
assessments as part of a group rather than on their own if they are absent.
Obviously if the children are ill we do understand.
We will be finishing at our normal time on Friday 23rd
May and returning back to school on Monday 9th June. We hope you
have a happy and safe break, and hope we have lots of sunshine too!
