Hi! It will be another busy week in KS1!
English
We
will be working on writing a character description this week based on a
character from a story. Can you discuss one of the characters in your child’s
reading book and choose some good adjectives to describe them?
We
will also be working on basic skills in reading and writing including
developing comprehension skills and the correct use of capital letters and full
stops.

Science
This
week in science we will be continuing our topic Changing Materials. We will be going to try to find out – what happens to different
materials when we heat them?
We will be discussing what
happens to materials such as egg, wood, wax, chocolate and cheese when we heat
them.
We will be looking at some
bread and then looking at the changes when we put it into the toaster.
Can you look together at
how foods change when we cook them? What differences can you see? Can you get
the original materials back again?
Topic
In topic we will be continuing to look at The Great Fire of London.
We
will be looking at entries from Pepys diary and reading what he says about his
experiences of the fire. We will also read some of the entries from John
Evelyn. We will discuss what an eye-witness account is. We will listen out for
words that describe how awful the whole Great Fire was: ‘miserable’, ‘rage’,
‘devoured’. We will note the style of diary entries – past tense, written in
the first person. We will imagine that we were a person living in London in the area of
Pudding Lane at the time of the Great Fire. We will then plan and write our own
diary entries!
This amazing
virtual tour of St Paul’s has a brilliant animation of the Great Fire. Click on
Explore St Paul’s and then on the picture to reach this (or use the click here link). The page you reach
contains a Thumbnail picture of the great fire on the right (use
vertical scroll bar to find it amongst other short animations) on which you
click for an audio video animation. QUITE SUPERB!
This is a must!
VERY good brief
history
Good history
outline with excellent extract from Pepys
This one is
simple and clear and has a good map showing the extent of the fire on
successive days
Come and See
The children will be continuing their new
topic “Spread The Word”.
Jesus promises to send
the Holy Spirit
We
will be looking at John 14: 18-19.
“I
will not leave you alone.”
“My
Father will give you another friend.”
“The
Holy Spirit will help you and guide you.”
“The
Holy Spirit will show you how to live.”
Some
questions we will be thinking about.
- Who did Jesus return to?
- What did He promise to do for His friends?
- What was the new friend called?
- How do you think Jesus’ friends felt when He gave them the news of the Holy Spirit?
- How do you think the Holy Spirit helps us?

SATs
We will be continuing
the KS1 SATs tests for the Y2 children this week. If possible please could you
try to ensure that the Y2 children are in school every day as testing could go
on any day. Experience has shown it is better for the children to carry out the
assessments as part of a group rather than on their own if they are absent.
Obviously if the children are ill we do understand.
Thank you for your continued support.
Year 1/2 Team.
