Hi

Welcome to another week in KS1!

It will be another busy week, we have lots of exciting things planned!

 

English

 

In English this week will be continuing to learn about nocturnal animals. We will be researching different nocturnal animals before writing our own reports on them.

 

Our objectives this week are to:-

 

  1. Understand differences between fact and fiction and be able to explain this.
  2. Ask simple and more complex questions.
  3. Talk about key structural features of an information page in a book.
  4. Produce own information page using key features, eg captions, labels, text boxes etc.
  5. Recognise and talk about the features of a non-chronological report.
  6. Write more complex sentences for a non-chronological report in an appropriate style.

Maths


This week in maths the Year 1 children will be learning how to add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number. They will also be finding a small difference between two numbers by counting on.

 

The Year 2 children will begin to add by bridging a multiple of 10. They will also find the difference between two numbers by counting on.

They will use the 100 square and the number line to support this.

 

 

It is vital that all children really understand the different language involved in addition and subtraction.

Science

This week in science we will be continuing our topic Changing Materials. We will be going to try to find out - Which objects will change shape if we stretch, twist, bend or squash them? The children will have a set of objects to explore and will see how they change when they use different forces on them.

 

Can you have a look around at home and identify which materials have been used to make different things. Why have these materials been chosen? Can you change the shape of any of these objects?

Topic

In topic we will be continuing to look at The Great Fire of London.

We will ask the children if they remember the story of the Great Fire?  We will re-tell the story & make sure the children understand the main aspects. Ask key questions? Where did it start? Why did it start? What helped to make it stop? (Wind died down & gunpowder explosions caused breaks). What famous buildings were destroyed? We will ask children to imagine how the fire spread & how difficult it was to stop!. Happily, at the end remarkably few people seem to have actually lost their lives – only about 8 or 9. This was because most people had time to clear their houses of their most important possessions & then escape without being burnt. We will ask the children what they would take if they had to clear their home of their most important possessions – we will be careful to stress that this does not include people!!!  We will also stress that if anyone is in a real fire, they should never stop to collect their possessions – they must leave the burning building straight away.

The children will be continuing their new topic “Spread The Word”.

Jesus is risen

We will be looking at the verses in Luke that describe when the women went to the tomb and found that Jesus was not there. The women were then given the message that Jesus had been raised from the dead. The women took this message to the disciples.

Some questions we will be thinking about.

  • How do you think the women were feeling?
  • What was the message the men gave to the women?
  • What had Jesus told them to remember? Discuss the words used.
  • How do you think the eleven disciples felt when they heard the news from the women?

SATs

 

 

 

We will be continuing the KS1 SATs tests for Y2 children this week. If possible please could you try to ensure that the Y2 children are in school every day as testing could go on any day. Experience has shown it is better for the children to carry out the assessments as part of a group rather than on their own if they are absent. Obviously if the children are ill we do understand.
