  2. Ask simple and more complex questions.
  3. Talk about key structural features of an information page in a book.
  4. Produce own information page using key features, eg captions, labels, text boxes etc.
  5. Recognise and talk about the features of a non-chronological report.
  6. Write more complex sentences for a non-chronological report in an appropriate style.

Can you think of any animals that wake up at night? Have a look at some of the websites below to give you some ideas!

Maths

This week in maths the Year 1 children will be learning how to add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number. They will also be finding a small difference between two numbers by counting on.

The Year 2 children will begin to add by bridging a multiple of 10. They will also find the difference between two numbers by counting on.

They will use the 100 square and the number line to support this.

It is vital that all children really understand the different language involved in addition and subtraction.

Science

This week in science we will be continuing our topic Changing Materials. We will be going to try to find out - Which objects will change shape if we stretch, twist, bend or squash them? The children will have a set of objects to explore and will see how they change when they use different forces on them.

Can you have a look around at home and identify which materials have been used to make different things. Why have these materials been chosen? Can you change the shape of any of these objects?

(contains some useful links to sites about materials).

Topic

In topic we will be continuing to look at The Great Fire of London.

We will ask the children if they remember the story of the Great Fire?  We will re-tell the story & make sure the children understand the main aspects. Ask key questions? Where did it start? Why did it start? What helped to make it stop? (Wind died down & gunpowder explosions caused breaks). What famous buildings were destroyed? We will ask children to imagine how the fire spread & how difficult it was to stop!. Happily, at the end remarkably few people seem to have actually lost their lives – only about 8 or 9. This was because most people had time to clear their houses of their most important possessions & then escape without being burnt. We will ask the children what they would take if they had to clear their home of their most important possessions – we will be careful to stress that this does not include people!!!  We will also stress that if anyone is in a real fire, they should never stop to collect their possessions – they must leave the burning building straight away.

This amazing virtual tour of St Paul’s has a brilliant animation of the Great Fire. Click on Explore St Paul’s and then on the picture to reach this (or use the click here link). The page you reach contains a Thumbnail picture of the great fire on the right (use vertical scroll bar to find it amongst other short animations) on which you click for an audio video animation. QUITE SUPERB!

This is a must!

VERY good brief history

Good history outline with excellent extract from Pepys

This one is simple and clear and has a good map showing the extent of the fire on successive days

Come and See

The children will be continuing their new topic “Spread The Word”.

Jesus is risen

We will be looking at the verses in Luke that describe when the women went to the tomb and found that Jesus was not there. The women were then given the message that Jesus had been raised from the dead. The women took this message to the disciples.

Some questions we will be thinking about.

  • How do you think the women were feeling?
  • What was the message the men gave to the women?
  • What had Jesus told them to remember? Discuss the words used.
  • How do you think the eleven disciples felt when they heard the news from the women?

Reminders

SATs

We will be continuing the KS1 SATs tests for Y2 children this week. If possible please could you try to ensure that the Y2 children are in school every day as testing could go on any day. Experience has shown it is better for the children to carry out the assessments as part of a group rather than on their own if they are absent. Obviously if the children are ill we do understand.

Thank you for your continued support.

Year 1/2 Team.

21st April 2014

Welcome back to the Summer term, which is the last one in the infants for our Year 2 children! The sun has arrived and we have lots of exciting things to look forward to this term!

As the good weather seems to have arrived, the children may now wear their Summer uniform when they return on Wednesday at 8.45am.

Maths

This week in Maths we will be learning about place value of numbers.

This week the children in Year 1 will begin to partition 2-digit numbers into T and U. They will also order numbers to at least 30 and say a number lying between two numbers.

The children in Year 2 will begin to partition 3-digit numbers into H, T and U. They will also begin to round numbers less than 100 to the nearest 10.

It is vital that all children really understand the concept of place value as it is the basis for many other important aspects of maths.

Science

Our new topic in science is Changing Materials. We will be exploring what materials are used for. We will be talking about the terms ‘material’ and ‘fabric’ and clarifying the difference.

We will give children labels  and ask them to label materials in the classroom. We will ask WHY have these materials been used?

Can you have a look around at home and identify which materials have been used to make different things. Why have these materials been chosen?

Topic

In topic we will be asking the question, “What happened in the Great Fire of London?”

We will be discussing when the Great Fire of London took place and what life was like then. The people lived in wooden houses which were close together, so close you could lean out of your window and shake your neighbour’s hand! There was no electricity, we will be thinking what might people have used instead? There were no radiators or gas or electric ovens. How did people keep warm and cook? We will explain that ovens were open fires in the houses or in the streets and that there were often small accidental fires as sparks flew out and caught on the straw that was laid on the floor for warmth. We will talk about the King’s Bakery in Pudding Lane. This was where the Great Fire is believed to have started.

Come and See

The children will be starting their new topic “Spread The Word”.

  • We will be thinking about  signs of new life. We will go on a walk around school and out of the classroom looking for signs of new life. We will say what new life we can see and ask questions about how these things happen.
  • We will change  the  purple cloth draped over our class reflection tables for a white one.  This is to show that ‘Jesus is risen’.
Some questions we will be thinking about.

  • How do we pass on messages?
  • Who could we tell?
  • When do we pass messages?
  • Why is it important to pass on messages?

SATs

We will be starting the KS1 SATs tests for Y2 after the 1st May. If possible please could you try to ensure that the Y2 children are in school after that date as testing could go on any day. Experience has shown it is better for the children to carry out the assessments as part of a group rather than on their own if they are absent. Obviously if children are ill we do understand.

7th April 2014

Well, it is the last week of term and we have lots of exciting activities planned this week!

We are very excited to be meeting  Vinny our Guide Dog on Thursday and eggstremely eggcited about our Egg Rolling which will be taking place on Wednesday.  We are also looking forward to seeing all of the fantastic Easter Bonnets at the  parade which will be happening this week!

Literacy

This week we are continuing to look at writing letters. This week we will be looking at formal and informal letters. The children will continue to look at the features of letters through the story “Dear Greenpeace” before writing one of their own.

We will be discussing the features that we find in letters.

  • An address so that we know who the letter came from, or where it is going to.
  • Addresses and names that begin with capital letters.
  • Dear written at the start and Love From written at the end.
  • Usually written in the past tense- telling you something that has already happened.

Can you find any letters to look at with your child that shows any of these features?

This is a great website where your child can follow the instructions to write their own letter.

This is a great website to practice your punctuation!

Numeracy

This week, we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We will be reviewing the names of 2D shapes which we have learned last year, and also looking at 3D shapes. They will be describing the properties of the 3D shapes, in terms of edges, vertices (corners) and faces.

Why not play a game at home of What am I? Ask your child to describe a shape with 3 attributes :

· I have one curved face
· I have two flat, circular faces
· You will often find things wrapped around me
· WHAT AM I?
· A cylinder!

By encouraging them to use adjectives to describe the shapes, it will also support them with their writing.

By the end of the week the children:

Will be able to begin to use the names of common 3D shapes and describe features of familiar 3D shapes.

Will be able to describe features of 3D shapes including number, types of faces and properties.

Science

We will be continuing to look at plants and this week we will be observing the changes in our broad bean seeds and looking at what are the best conditions for seeds to grow. We will be making the final observations of our broad beans and writing up our findings.

We will be asking:-

  1. Do seeds/plants need soil to germinate and grow?
  2. Do seeds/plants need light to germinate and grow?
  3. Do seeds/plants need water to germinate and grow?
  4. Do seeds/plants need air to germinate and grow?

We have started planting some seeds and getting ready for planting out in the allotment, very exciting! Here’s hoping for a good summer and a bumper harvest!

Although the following websites are a great way to learn about this topic during the wet weather, there is really nothing better than getting out the wellies and a trowel and having a great time in the garden. It might even be a good way to get the children helping out with the weeding after the winter – just as long as they know the difference between the dandelions and the prize azaleas!!
Also have a look around on the way to school, can you see any buds forming or spring bulbs coming up?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/growing_plants.shtml can you find the right conditions for the plant to grow?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/7_8/plants_grow.shtml a little more challenging

http://www.topicbox.org.uk/browse.php?item_ID=5584&subject=Science&topic=Life%20-%20Plants this is a really useful powerpoint to download and keep for the whole of the topic. It is aimed at Year 3, but we really do need to push the children on, as their knowledge on this subject is very good already.

http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/science/plants/index.htm click on the seed growth leaf for a great animation of what a seed needs to grow.

http://www.crickweb.co.uk/assets/resources/flash.php?&file=plantlabelmx a very simple resource to drag and drop the labels onto the right part of the plant. As you move through this site though, you will be expected to explain the functions of each part. This is also really useful in supporting the literacy for this week.

http://plantsinmotion.bio.indiana.edu/plantmotion/earlygrowth/germination/germ.html how fascinating! You will need to sit with your child for this, but the use of stop motion photography is fantastic. Just click on the sunflower germination – it’s really interesting! The movies for flowers are also beautiful!
    Topic
The children will be continuing the topic on our senses.
This week we will be looking at our sense of touch and describing how different things feel.
The children will be feeling different objects and using different adjectives to describe them.

    Come and See
The children will be continuing their new topic “Giving”.
We will be learning about Easter Sunday and looking at the story from Matthew’s gospel. We will then be writing the Easter Story. Christians remember Jesus died for everyone.
The key words the children will be focusing on are sharing, giving, opportunities, Lent, prayer.
Some questions we will be thinking about.

  • How do you think the women felt before they went to the tomb?
  • What did the angel have to tell them?
  • What do you think the women said when they saw the disciples?
  • What is Easter about?

    Reminders

Wednesday 9th April Infants Egg Rolling. The children need to decorate a hardboiled egg and bring in to school on the day.

Wednesday 9th April 3pm – FOSV Easter Tombola, Coffee and Hot Cross Bun Sale

 Guide Dog
As you know, our children worked really hard in order to raise enough money to sponsor the training of a new guide dog. They did really well and managed to achieve this some months ago. Our guide dog ‘Vinny’ is now grown up and doing well with his training. He and his owners will be coming into school next Thursday 10th April along with some pups. If your child has either an allergy to dogs or has a fear of them, please inform your child’s class teacher. Thank you.

Friday 11th April in the afternoon we have the infants Easter Bonnet Parade. Please could we ask that these are ONLY brought into school on the day, as storage is at a premium.

 Easter Service
School closes next Friday 11th April for the Easter Break. The children from Y5/6 will be leading us in an Easter Service that morning which starts after registration at approx. 9.15am. Everybody is welcome and we look forward to seeing you there.

Thank you for your continued support.
