10th February 2014

Welcome to the last week of this half term. We can’t believe how quickly it has gone.

Literacy

We are continuing onto the second week of our poetry.

The children will be working towards writing a winter poem using a variety of adjectives.

This week we will read:

How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf_sNUaZi 0

The children will work in partners to discuss their own ideas and what types of things we see in the sky at night.

Towards the end of the week the children will be writing their own poetry about winter.

Numeracy

This week in Maths we will be
describe position: above, below, beside, left, right.

The Year 1 children need to know direction and movement: forwards, backwards, up, down, left, right.

The Year 2 children will need to know that a right angle is a measure of a quarter turn; recognise right angles. They also need to be able to recognise clockwise and anticlockwise turns.

Some websites to help with this are:-

Science

The children will continue to learn that humans need food and water to stay alive; the children are tasting different juices and choosing their favourite flavour. The following sites will show the type of vocabulary the children will be expected to know by the end of the topic.

http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/healthy_eating/eng/Introduction/default.htm we will be using this website in class to introduce the topic this week

http://www.crickweb.co.uk/assets/resources/flash.php?&file=platehtml The balanced plate – sort the foods into the correct category as they come along the conveyor belt.

http://www.welltown.gov.uk/school/dining_game.html sort the food from the plate into the correct category

http://www.greatgrubclub.com/?location_id=71 a great site, with lots of fun activities to share. It does involve cooking, which is great activity and covers so many areas of the curriculum. Why not have a go at making the ‘eye-ball eggs’??

Topic

The children have started their topic and Healthy Humans. We talked about the importance of how we use our lungs.  We will be discussing the question:

“What does a skeleton do?”

To support this learning at home you could talk to your child about the importance of different bones in our bodies.

Come and See

The children will be in their final week of the topic of “Books.”

Here are some key questions we have been asking the children during this topic?

What does the Gospel mean?

Why is the bible so important to us?

What many part do we have to the bible?

What are these parts called?

Why should we show reverence to the bible?

How many Gospels are there?

What are the names of the Gospels?

How do the Gospels help us?

What is your favourite story about Jesus and why?

We will be continuing to learn these new words and their meaning:

thurible, incense, lectern,

Can the children choose a favourite story from the Bible and retell the story to someone in your family?

The children can continue to bring their own bible into school. We can put them on our class collective worship table for display.

Homework

All of the children need to bring in their homework folders every week. We can place the speaking and listening homework inside the folders for the following week.

Year 2’s you need to bring your completed reading comprehensions in every week.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to come in and see one of the one and two team.

Thank you for your support.

Reminders

Parent/Teacher consultations (10.02.14,11.02.14,12.02.14)
You should have received your time slot allocation for your parent/teacher consultations next week. Please remember that appointments are for ten minutes. Should you feel that additional time is needed, please don’t hesitate to make an additional appointment with your child’s teacher. We look forward to meeting you.

Contacting School
We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that it is important that you contact school as soon as possible if you know that your child is going to be off for any reason. It is also important that we are able to contact you if your child is ill or been involved in an accident, so if you change your telephone number or address, please remember to let us know straight away. Many thanks.

Traffic issues
Once again, there has been another ‘near miss’ reported to me today, about a car speeding out of school to get through the barrier AFTER following another car through. The grey Renault mounted the kerb on Finlay Avenue in order to get passed the Refuse Collection lorry, causing a number of parents who were walking, to have to move onto the road to avoid being hit.
There has been an increase in the number of parents and carers who are walking down to school, which is encouraging, but there are still a number who continue to drive their vehicles in and around the school boundaries and also those who are parking inconsiderately, both blocking resident’s driveways and parking on kerbs.
IF YOU MUST DRIVE TO SCHOOL, PLEASE PARK ON THE CO-OP CAR PARK AND WALK DOWN. WE MUST HAVE THE SAFETY OF ALL OUR CHILDREN AT THE FOREFRONT OF OUR MINDS.

Thank you for your continued support.

Year 1/2 Team.

NEWSLETTER: 7th February 2014

Dear Parents,

Just to give you all an update on our fundraising and upcoming events for 2014.

FUNDRAISING GOAL

Our totaliser is now up at school in the area outside Mrs Worrall’s office.  As you will probably aware we are currently saving for new learning screens in the junior classrooms, something which all our children will benefit from as they move through the school.  Our target is £8400, and the totaliser currently stands at £4967.82.  With all your help we are truly hoping to raise the difference and have these screens up by the end of the year!

CHRISTMAS EVENTS

Following the Christmas fair and sale of the Christmas performance photo cards we are proud to announce that we could add £867.82  to our totaliser in January.

A huge thank you to all of you who helped in any way for these events, and parents for supporting.

UPCOMING EVENTS

DISCOS

Infant Disco to be held on the evening of Thursday 27th February.  Letters will be going out next week for you to get your tickets.

Junior Disco to be held on the evening of Thursday 6th  March.  Letters for tickets will be given to juniors in the first week back after half term.

IMPORTANT We must insist that children are collected from the school hall following the discos.  We cannot let any child leave the school premises to meet parents waiting outside school grounds.

We have quite a good stock of uniform, currently.  This will be on sale at the start and end of the discos – please come and have a look as you drop off your child or pick them up.

(Infant parents, we have some brand new boys summer polo t shirts in some smaller sizes.  Have a look if you need any for summer (its not that far away? Honest?), at only £1 each they will be quite popular, but when they are gone they are gone.)

HALF TERM CHALLENGE

For the benefit of reception parents or any families new to the school, we ran a sponsored challenge last February half term.  It was like a treasure hunt to keep children entertained over the holiday and raise funds too.  A lot of the pupils enjoyed searching for 100 small costless items for the challenge.  We raised over £600 for school funds and some children won cash prizes for their efforts.

We will run a similar challenge again this year due to its popularity in 2013.  Look out for guidelines and instructions coming out via pupils bags next week, and lets see if we can raise more than the £600 we raised last year!?  It will be “The same, but different” – a little clue as to this years theme!!

OTHER NEWS

EASTER:

Following these events for February/early March, the next event will be Easter.  We will be holding an Easter Event nearer the time with an Easter Egg Tombola, Egg hunt, and refreshments with prize bingo in the school hall one afternoon after school.  To be confirmed.

CAKE SALES:

We are still looking for volunteers to run a series of cake sales after school over the school year.  We are looking for a small group of mums who are willing to take on the cake sales (perhaps one every term or half term.)  Cake sales usually raise at least £50 each time, so are a worth while fund raising event if we can find helpers.

The usual helpers who do so much for other events are not always available immediately after school as they are taking up other roles as their children move further up the school, which is why we are hoping to recruit new helpers to our cause.

SPONSORSHIP

Does your company operate any charitable donation schemes or fund matching sponsorship?  If you feel your company may make a donation to a local concern, please get in touch.   In the past, company sponsorship has acted to boost fundraising.  Can your company help?
