21st July 2014

Well, have you got the Kleenex ready?

We have now reached the final two days of term, and we shall all certainly need the tissues out, even before we get to Tuesday! This year has flown by, and now we are ready to say goodbye to our children as we wish them well for their adventures next year!

Leaver's Mass

We will definitely need our tissues for this one! We say goodbye to our Year 6 children on Tuesday. There will be a leaver's mass at 9.00am in the hall, to which you are invited. Please remember that space is at a premium, and we would be grateful if prams and pushchairs could be left in the patio area.

And finally...

All that is left to say, is a huge thank you for all the support you have given to all the staff this year. We have had a great year and the children have made a tremendous amount of progress since September.

We shall miss all of the children and hope that the Year 2's still come back to see us when they are very grown up juniors. They are more than ready for the challenge now!

Holidays

I know September seems a million miles away, but children do lose a little momentum over the summer break.

Have a look through some of the links from past blogs to keep the grey matter ticking over. You could even look at the Year 3/4 blog to give you a head start!

Have a really good summer and we'll see you again in September.

14th July 2014

Hi! Thank you to all of you who came and supported our Sports Day on Friday. It was a lovely afternoon, the sun was out and the children were fantastic! What more could we wish for!

After a wonderfully hardworking year, we have now reached the final full week of term, and we shall all certainly need the tissues out, even before we get to next Tuesday! It doesn't seem 5 minutes since we were saying 'hello' to the beginning of the new year, and here we are, already at the end of another successful year.

This last week is, just like any other, extremely busy, with lots to fit in, so here goes...

Literacy

We will be updating any final assessments, ready to pass up to the next class teacher, which will include a piece of writing.

In order for your child to continue to practise the skills that we have been learning this year, it would be helpful if you could continue to work on writing over the summer break. How about buying a new notebook for your child to complete a diary of their summer hols with some lovely illustrations of course! We would love to see the completed diaries in September!

Numeracy

All the children have now been assessed for their end of year checks, and what a fantastic lot they are too!
We are going to spend the last week, consolidating a few areas where the children would benefit from a little more practice, to enable them to really hit the ground running in September.
If you would like to support the children in beginning to learn times tables in preparation for Year 3, then that would be fantastic. Year 3 have a weekly times tables champion test – wouldn’t it be fantastic if they could have some children achieving the bronze award in September?

Year 1 children could also move onto practising their number bonds to 20 now and even pairs to 100! Imagine how quickly we are going to be able to move on with our curriculum in September if the children are confident with these before the end of the year?

Reports

You should have received your child's annual report on Friday.

We love to read your comments, so please do take 5 minutes to complete the reply form inside - they are appreciated.

If you have any outstanding library books or are gathering a collection of reading books at home, could we please ask that these are returned this week, so that we can review our stock levels, which are somewhat depleted at the moment! Under pillows and beds seem to be a favourite place for storing books at the moment!

Reminders
Sun cream
And finally, we are delighted to be able to request that children bring a hat and sun cream into school for the rest of the term! The weather has been absolutely beautiful and we are optimistic that it will continue, so it is important that our little ones are protected from the sun.
If you apply a layer before they come to school in the morning, this will last until lunchtime. It is also important that they are able to apply it themselves.

Thank you for your continued support.
Year 1/2 Team.

7th July 2014

Hi! We all had a fantastic, if soggy, time on Friday at Gulliver’s World! Lots of fun rides and ice cream in the rain! Brilliant!

Can you believe that we only have two weeks and two days to go? This year seems to have gone very quickly and very soon, the children will be moving on to their next year group. The class organisation for next year is being finalised, and you should be informed of this through your child’s annual report, which you will receive on Friday.

As you can appreciate, the staff take a great deal of care and time to compile these reports, as they are a record of your child's achievements throughout the course of the year. Please take 5 minutes to complete the reply form which will be included with report, as we do really appreciate your responses.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, we have our New Starters coming into school for the first time for their visits. This means that our current Foundation Stage children will be joining us for a taste of Year One. Also, it will soon be time for our Year 2's to venture across the hall to the Land of the Giants, so they will be having a couple of taster days in the Juniors this week.
As we are in the final two weeks, we are updating lots of information to pass up to the next teacher, including number work and two pieces of independent writing.

If you have any outstanding library books or are gathering a collection of reading books at home, could we please ask that these are returned this week, so that we can review our stock levels, which are somewhat depleted at the moment! Under pillows and beds seem to be a favourite place for storing books at the moment!

SPORTS DAY
On Friday this week, we will be holding our annual sports day. The infants will be holding their sports in the afternoon, starting at 1.15pm. We are sure that it will be an enjoyable afternoon, but we would ask, that in the interests of all of our children's safety, that you DO NOT take your children home directly from the school field. They will be escorted back to their classrooms at the end of the day, and you will be able to take them home via the usual exit. We would also ask that you do not bring drinks and snacks for the children. We will be providing drinks and there will be an opportunity to buy refreshments for yourself and your little one after the event has finished at home time.

Reminders
Sun cream
And finally, we are delighted to be able to request that children bring a hat and sun cream into school for the rest of the term! The weather has been absolutely beautiful and we are optimistic that it will continue, so it is important that our little ones are protected from the sun.

30th June 2014

Hola! Spanish week was fantastic and we all enjoyed our flamenco dancing on Friday. Maybe you have had some demonstrations this weekend!

On Friday we will be going on our end of year trip to Gulliver’s World! Please arrive at school at the normal time on Friday and we hope to arrive back at school at approximately 3.30pm.
Please send a packed lunch in a disposable bag, clearly labelled, no glass bottles or fizzy drinks please. Should the weather be lovely and sunny (fingers crossed!) please ensure that your child has a sun hat, covered shoulders and sun cream. Likewise, if the weather is bad, please send them in appropriate outdoor clothing ( waterproof coat and shoes). Your child can bring up to £3.00 to spend.
We are looking forward to a fantastically exciting day!

English

In English this week we will be looking at the book “The Magic Finger” by Roald Dahl.
We will discuss the importance of the blurb, freeze frame events in the story and discuss what it would be like to have a magic finger!
At the end of the week the children will then be able to write their own adventure story!

Can you have a look at some of your books at home and see if they have a blurb? Does the blurb make you want to read the book?

Maths

This week in maths we will be doubling multiples of 5, halving multiples of 10 and using near doubles.
We will also be looking at the relationship between halves and quarters.

Some websites to help:-

Science
This week we will be continuing our new topic on Living Things.
We will be asking the question “Can I find some plants and minibeasts and name them?”
We will be venturing outside to go on a minibeast hunt! We will carefully collect the minibeasts and note where they were found. We will try to work out why the minibeasts were found where they were.
We will be careful to return the minibeasts to their homes once we have observed them.
Can you have a minibeast hunt in your garden or at the park? Can you identify the creatures that you find?
Make sure that you put them back in their home once you have observed them.
Topic
We will be continuing our topic The Football World Cup, which the children are really enjoying!
This week we will be continuing to look at the maths involved in the World Cup!
We will be looking at which teams have won in the past and completing a tally chart to show the data. We will then represent the data in a pictogram!
Reminders
Sports Day

The new date for Sports Day is Friday 11th July.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused.  It will be held in the afternoon for our Foundation Stage and Key Stage One children. We would love to see you all there, so all we can do now is to hope for good weather! If you haven't already done so, could you please check that your child's pumps fit them, and that they have appropriate school PE kit.
