CAFOD
Family Fast Day
Envelopes were distributed this week to
children. Donations could include the money that each family would have spent
on one meal. This is a worthwhile cause and we have received many thank you
letters from CAFOD for our generous donations over a number of years.
Homework
Homework was sent out this week on Thursday, and
we hope that all the children will be able to complete it. Could we remind
you that it should be completed in HB pencil and any lines
are drawn with a ruler. Numeracy work should be completed online,
using the My Maths website. Login details will be stuck into your child's
diary this week. We would like parents to sign their child’s homework too
every week, so we know you have seen the work your children is expected to
complete. If you child experiences any difficulties with homework, please
feel free to make a comment in their homework book or their diary.
A
reminder
We have noticed quite a few children playing on
the equipment outside Foundation Stage in a morning and again after school.
Could we ask that you refrain from playing on the equipment during these times
please. Many thanks.
Congestion
A big thank you to those parents who drop your
children off on the playground in a morning. It really does help them to
become more independent and ensures that they are ready to start work much
more quickly. From
this week, particularly all of our new foundation stage children are now in
full time, we politely request that parents do not come into the area or
cloakrooms during morning or afternoon sessions. Thank you for your
understanding with this.
AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS
You
will have read on this week's newsletter, that ALL children MUST now be
collected from the main entrance door ONLY after any clubs. The person in
charge of the club will bring your child to the main entrance, and hand them
over to yourselves, or someone whom you have nominated in advance. This also
applies to Football after school - parents are asked NOT to go onto the
school field - instead, please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before the
end of the club, and you will be able to collect them from the main entrance.
As
this is in the interests of all the children's safety, we thank you for your
understanding and co-operation.

This week, we are moving onto reading and
writing our own information texts. For this week, we will be focussing on
Sharks!
Have a look and see what information you can
find over the weekend, and bring it to school this week, so we can add to our
class project.
Spelling
games and online activities can be found by clicking on our ‘links’ menu on
the left hand side of the screen, or by going to http://www.topicbox.net/English/word_spelling_activities/
A big thank you to everyone who has commented on
their child’s reading in the diaries. It really does make such a difference
to the progress your child can make during the year. We would ask that you
make a comment at least twice per week in the diary and value your support
with this.

Maths
This week in Maths we will be learning about
number bonds.
Year 1 children will know
addition facts for pairs that total up to 6 and relate addition facts to an
understanding of addition, including + and =
Year 2 children will rehearse
addition and subtraction facts for pairs that total up to 10 and relate
addition and subtraction facts to missing number sentences.

In Science this week, the children will be
putting their listening skills to the test and we will be checking if they
can remember how to make a circuit. They will also all have the chance to see
if they can make the boy’s nose light up in the area (if you have a look at
the interactive display in the area, it all makes sense!)

some of these are based in KS2, but many of the children will be able to
access them when working alongside an adult. Have a go at making an

Where does it come from? How many objects in the house use it as a power
source? Why is it dangerous? This is our first science topic of the year, so
why not see how much your child already knows?

Literacy

This week, we will be reading the story ‘Bog
Babies’ in our Literacy lessons. We will be investigating how the author
describes the settings of the story and working on how to predict what
happens next.
We will be looking at how question marks and
exclamation marks are used in the story and then having a go at using them to
make up our own questions.
By the end of the week, the children will be
using drama and ‘Freeze Frames’ to act out what happens in the story. Some
children will be ‘hotseated’, and asked questions – they have to remember
that they have to answer in role, as a bog baby! During the dramas, the
children will use the musical instruments to create sound effects for the
creatures habitats.

Many thanks to all of you who attended our
Induction meeting on Thursday evening. We hope you found it useful and we are
looking forward to working with you in partnership throughout this year.
Also, thank you to those of you who have
volunteered your support this year. We have plenty of opportunities and there
is always some way in which you can support both the children and the staff.
Just pop a note in the diaries and we will get back to you.
Mrs
Malone
This week, Mrs Malone will be accompanying the
Y6 children to Conway and we are sure she will have a great time. Mr Hughes,
who works in Key Stage 2, will be working in Mrs Malone's class this week,
alongside the rest of the team.

become more independent and ensures that they are ready to start work much

Unfortunately, there are still a number of parents
who bring their child into school every morning. The corridor where the
children come in, gets very congested and often contributes towards lots of
tears from some children. Could we reassure you that the children who do come
into school on their own, do so brilliantly and are often the children who
are ready and eager to learn. If there are tears, it is better to hand your
child over to a member of staff to bring into school. The children are always
fine after a couple of minutes and are off playing with their friends! Please
be assured that if there was an issue, we would always contact you by phone.

We continue with our second week of Stories with
Familiar Settings. The children made some great worry dolls last week after
they read the story of Silly Billy.
We will be describing characters’ feelings using
adjectives; the children will be creating story bridges, using the Story
‘Operation Night Monster’.
If you get a chance to watch Monster’s
University this weekend, it will really give them a head start.
The children will also be allocated their guided
reading groups this week, so we can begin to work on their comprehension
targets for this year. You will also be informed of the sounds your child
needs to work on as soon as our assessments are complete.
A big thank you to everyone who has commented on
their child’s reading in the diaries. It really does make such a difference

make a comment at least once per week in the diary and value your support

Maths
This week in Maths we
will be starting the topic of place value. This is a very important topic in
Maths as it is the basis of many areas including ordering, addition and
subtraction of bigger numbers.
Year 1 children will recognise
the value of each digit in a 'teens' number and say which is more or less of
two numbers.
Year 2 children will partition
2-digit numbers into T and U; order numbers up to at least 100 and position
them on a 100-square.

Information
|
The first two weeks
back to school in September are called the Induction Period. This is an
invaluable time for both children and staff, as we become familiar with
routines and children’s different learning styles. Both this blog and your
child’s home-school link book will be valuable sources of communication
throughout the year. Please do comment in the diaries when you have listened
to your child read or if you have any information to pass onto us. In terms
of the home - link books, unfortunately there has been a problem with their
manufacture over the Summer and we had hoped they would be with us by the end
of last week. We have been assured they will arrive in school this week. As soon
as we receive them, we will send them home.
INDUCTION MEETING
THIS THURSDAY 12th SEPTEMBER at 3.15pm in Mrs Worrall's room. Creche
facilities will be available in the school hall.
|
|
Literacy
|
We will be starting
a new topic of Stories with Familiar settings this week. The children will be
looking at a story called Silly Billy and will be discussing worries that he
may have, that are similar to their own.
We would also
encourage you to practice handwriting at home with your child, as well as
colouring, both of which will support the development of their fine motor
skills.
|
|
Numeracy
|
Can your child tell
you what the pairs to 10 are? What about adding and subtracting quickly in
their heads? We will be spending the induction period assessing where they
are up to after the break.
As with literacy, we shall be assessing just how much the children
have been able to recall from last year, so that we can ‘hit the ground
running’ with more formal numeracy sessions.
This week, we will be assessing the children’s knowledge of number – can they match the correct number of objects to the digit? Do they know the number names? Are they able to form the number correctly? Can they count in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s? Can they order numbers correctly, both forwards and backwards? A good way of practising ordering numbers (and a good way for children to check for themselves if they have got it right!) is to completed traditional ‘dot-to-dot’ puzzles. Tesco or Asda have lots of books of these ready-made for you! Perhaps when you are putting the shopping away this weekend, you could ask your child to group things together – If I have 6 tins, how many more will I need to make 8? 10? Also, why not get your child to pair up all the socks for the family? This is a really good way of encouraging them to count in twos. |
|
Science
|
What does your
child know about electricity? Where does it come from? How many objects in
the house use it as a power source? Why is it dangerous? This is our first
science topic of the year, so why not see how much your child already knows?
|
|
Come
and See
|
Our first topic is
all about Beginnings. We will be looking at what the word family means to
them; what people do they associate with family and what joys and sorrows
does family life bring? We will then move onto the story of the Creation.
|
|
TOPIC
|
This term's topic
question is What do we know about our neighbourhood? We will be looking at
Penketh and Warrington more generally. If you have any historical or
geographical information about Warrington, we would love to hear from you.
