29th April 2013

Hi

Welcome to another week in KS1.

Maths

This week in Maths we will be continuing to learn about addition and subtraction with a focus on problem solving.

Year 1 children will be learning to add two 'teens' numbers, not crossing a multiple of 10; subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number by counting back and subtract one multiple of 10 from another.

Year 2 children will be learning to add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number; add two 2-digit numbers and subtract one 2-digit number from another.

Literacy

The children have absolutely loved the work we have done over the past week on Aliens love Underpants!! So much so that we did not get to actually write a story based on the book and consequently we will be focusing on that this week. We will be encouraging the children to apply all the skills they have been learning, e.g, using wonderful describing words, adding amazing connectives and putting in fabulous verbs and adverbs!!

Topic

This session continues a project of creating a rocket for the classroom.

In this session the children will begin the process of constructing the big rocket which they designed last time. They work together to investigate ways of assembling and joining different sections. They develop their abilities to work with different materials.

Science

We are continuing to look at forces in science and have been discussing pushes and pulls. This week we are going to be helping Discovery Dog solve another problem. Naughty Nora has chewed up his favourite toys and Discovery Dog wants to get a new ball to play with. He wants to choose a really bouncy one so we are going to help him test some balls so that we can find the bounciest balls for him! We planned the investigation last week, making sure that we use fair testing. This week we will be going out into the playground to do our testing!

Can you have a look around at home and find some pushes and pulls?

SATs

We will be starting the KS1 SATs tests for Y2 after the 1st May. If possible please could you try to ensure that the Y2 children are in school after that date as testing could go on any day. Experience has shown it is better for the children to carry out the assessments as part of a group rather than on their own if they are absent. Obviously if children are ill we do understand.

Reminders

Just a reminder about any outstanding medical forms for the ever closer Beeston trip. The children are now so excited and can’t wait for ‘the big sleep-over!!’

Also a letter came home about the Y1/2 trip to Jodrell Bank on Tuesday. If you haven’t yet seen it, have a check in your child’s bag or ask for another copy. Thanks.

Finally Mrs Worrall will be back with us on Monday after her secondment to Croft Primary School. We know she has missed us and is raring to go for the remainder of the term!

Have a great week!

22nd April 2013

Welcome to another week!

Maths

This week in Maths we will be continuing to learn about finding the difference between two numbers plus finding halves and quarters of numbers and shapes.

Year 1 children will find a small difference between two numbers by counting on.

Year 2 children will begin to recognise halves and quarters of shapes and numbers of objects.

Finding halves and quarters of shapes and numbers lead in to learning about different types of fractions and are an important part of mathematics.

Literacy

The children will use the book “Aliens love underpants” to look at different aspects of space. We will be using questions to role play and hot seat “Aliens”.

We will also be using story boards to retell the story using capital letters, full stops, imaginative language, conjunctions and inverted commas.  The children can explore different aspects of the books by making an alien passport and an alien character profile.

Activities can be downloaded from this website:

Topic

This session starts a project of creating a rocket for the classroom. The children look at features of a rocket and how the design contributes to its ability to penetrate the atmosphere. All of the children will design a big rocket which they will begin to make in the next session.

The children will use photographs and the internet to see different designs of rockets.

Science

We are looking at forces in science and have been discussing pushes and pulls. We are going to be helping Discovery Dog solve another problem. Naughty Nora has chewed up his favourite toys and Discovery Dog wants to get a new ball to play with. He wants to choose a really bouncy one so we are going to help him test some balls so that we can find the bounciest balls for him! We will be planning the investigation this week, making sure that we use fair testing.

Can you have a look around at home and find some pushes and pulls?

Trip

As part of our topic on Space we have arranged a trip to Jodrell Bank Space Centre for Monday 17th June. The children will have the opportunity to join in with two workshops plus a look around the centre. The cost of the trip will be £12 which includes the coach and workshops. A letter will be sent out this week with more details.

Have an enjoyable week!

The Year One/Two team.

Literacy

Silly stuff and patterns

This plan links to Sessions 1-2 in the Journeys in Space theme, Journeys Topic

The children will be looking at the poem the Owl and the Pussycat and looking at the different words and whether they make sense.  We will be talking about verses and rhymes. The focus is will to use the framework of the Owl and the Pussycat to make up another poem The Owl and the Astronaut. The children will be using related language to select vocabulary to appropriate to space.  The children will be looking for similar patterns in the text.

Numeracy

This week in Maths we will be learning about addition and subtraction including finding the difference between two numbers.

Year 1 children will add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number and find a small difference between two numbers by counting on

Year 2 children will begin to add by bridging a multiple of 10 and find the difference between two numbers by counting on

It is vital that all children really understand the different language involved in addition and subtraction.

Science

This week the children will Investigate the question, which ball bounces best? (Discovery Dog investigation)

The children will test conditions, in order to find out which ball bounces the highest.  The children will continue to explore the concept of fair testing.  I will develop this concept by allowing the children to suggest that each ball must be dropped from the same height with the same amount of force.

The children will be provided with a pre-drawn recording sheet so they can present their findings.

-           In order to conclude the lesson children will be provided with an opportunity to evaluate what they have discovered and say whether what happened was what they expected.

Topic

This session follows session 1 and children compare The Owl and the Astronaut with Owl and Pussycat. The idea of travel into space is introduced and discussed – what is space like? We discuss owl’s dreams and children write what they might dream of in space.

If the children have any space books at home that they would like to share with their class, they are welcome to bring them in. Please ensure that they have their name in them.

Homework will commence week beginning 15th April.

Beeston Meeting

Thank you to all of the parents who attended the Beeston meeting on Thursday. Hopefully all of your questions were answered. We would appreciate any outstanding medical forms returned as soon as possible. Thank you for your support.
As you are all aware, Mrs Worrall has been asked by the Local Authority to be Acting Headteacher at another primary school for two weeks, to cover for the Paternity leave of another headteacher. Her class will be covered by Mr Broadbent during this time.

We look forward to a happy and hardworking half term.

8th April 2013

Welcome back to the Summer term, which is the last one in the infants for our Year 2 children!

As the good weather seems to have arrived (albeit a little later than planned), the children may now wear their Summer uniform when they return on Tuesday at 8.45am.

Literacy

This week, we will be completing our information texts about Dinosaurs, but also starting a new topic of Journey into Space. We would like the children to start to find out about Space, the planets, rockets, astronauts etc., in preparation for some fantastic writing opportunities and role plays that we have planned!

Maths

This week in Maths we will be learning about place value of numbers.

Year 1 children will  begin to partition 2-digit numbers into Tens and Units; and order numbers to at least 30; say a number lying between two numbers.

Year 2 children will begin to partition 3-digit numbers into Hundreds, Tens and Units; and to round numbers less than 100 to the nearest 10.

It is vital that all children really understand the concept of place value as it is the basis for many other important aspects of maths.

Topic

In this session the children will read, enjoy and learn by heart, The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear. They will compose poems about space journeys based on the same pattern, then read a range of poems with the theme of space. Create imaginary aliens and write a counting poem about them.
