18th March 2013

First of all, a huge thank you for your generosity last week, for our school fundraising for Comic Relief. The children should be really proud of themselves that their donations all contributed to the £75 million that was raised on Friday night. Well done!

This week, we will be looking at improving our writing of Information Texts through looking at Dinosaurs. The children have been enthralled by the unexpected arrival of an egg on the playground, which arrived for Foundation Stage last week. When it hatched into our sand tray, they were so excited, that they asked if they could do some work on them too!

So, we are doing just that, and producing fact files for the children in Foundation Stage to help them with their reading!

If they would like a sneak preview, and start to gather some ideas for their writing, have a look at these sites to help:

This week in Maths we will be working on problem solving. Now the children are familiar with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division they will be using and applying their knowledge to a range of word problems.

Year 1 children will learn how to work out how to solve simple word problems using addition and subtraction.

Year 2 children will learn how to work out how to solve simple word problems using all 4 operations.

It is important that your child is confidently able to know and use the language of maths. To enable them to achieve this target, they need to understand all of the words which mead adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

Adding:- add, adding, plus, more, increase, altogether, and, sum of.

Subtracting:- take away, minus, leaves, subtract, less than, fewer, difference between, decrease.

Multiplying:-  times, multiply, product, lots of, groups of, double.

Dividing:- share, divide, half,

In our topic work, the children will be learning about that the clothes needed to keep baby warm or cool are different all over the world. The  children will study pictures of natural fibres like cotton and wool being used around the world. The children will  select a piece of fabric & suggest a suitable climate for baby to wear it.

Homework

Can we remind you that Maths homework is given through the My Maths website, and children are expected to complete it each week online. If you have any difficulties in accessing this, please do let us know through your child's diary.

On the subject of diaries, thank you to the parents who have completed the new reading sheet in the diaries. We have seen an increased number of comments written in them this week from you,  and the children have been so keen to tell us, it has been a pleasure to see!

Easter Bonnets and Egg Rolling

Just a quick reminder about our Easter Bonnet and Egg Rolling competitions next week. I hope you are all getting creative at home? We can't wait to see them, but just a word of warning - PLEASE make sure the eggs are hard-boiled, as 100 being rolled and subsequently broken, does tend to generate a certain aroma!!

Have a good week.
